David L. Marshall reviewed my book together with two other books in a substantial essay in History of Humanities.
"To mount a credible defense of the humanities in a hostile environment seems to involve maintaining that the humanities constitute a quite distinct form of knowing. The three books that I’m reviewing here—Eric Hayot’s Humanist Reason, Rens Bod’s World of Patterns, and Lorraine Daston’s Rules—do not argue for or assume the radical distinctness of the humanities. Nonetheless, they offer us important resources with which to articulate what the humanities do."
