"Een Wereld vol Patronen" ("A World of Patterns") will be presented on 23 January 2019

My new book 'Een wereld vol patronen' will be presented on 23 January at 5 pm at the publishing house Prometeus, Herengracht 48, Amsterdam. Interested parties can register via the email-address on the following website.

This book gives an overview of the history of knowledge from a world-wide perspective (discussing the humanities, sciences, jurisprudence, medicine, as well as disciplines that are no longer seen as 'academic'). The book moves both the West and natural sciences from their central positions and discusses how people have searched for patterns and underlying principles in their surrounding world from prehistory to the modern period.

12 December 2023: Lecture at VUB Brussels: "What kind of knowledge is the pursuit of meaning?"

On 12 December at 16.15h, I will give a talk at the KIIP seminar entitled "What kind of knowledge is the pursuit of meaning?". In this talk I will present a longue durée exploration of meaning-making from a global perspective. I argue that a total of 185 distinct meaning-making practices can be discerned that can be grouped into 30 themes. I discuss a number of general patterns and principles that can be found in meaning-making practices across the world and will go into the question as to what kind of knowledge meaning-making actually is. 14-15 November 2023: Online Workshop "Epistemic Transfer in the Humanities"

On 14 November I will give a brief presentation to introduce the workshop on Epistemic Transfer in the History of the Humanities.
