A New History of the Humanities among “Books of the Year”

The Higher Education Strategy Associates (HESA) has selected "A New History of the Humanities" as one of the "Books of the Year". They seem to refer to the new paperback edition of my book which came out in North America in January 2016, so yes, it's really this year.

24 June 2021: Inaugural lecture and Francqui medal: "How the Humanities Changed the World"

Due to covid, my inaugural lecture as Francqui awardee will be held on 24 June. I will be awarded a medal by the Francqui Foundation, as well as a medal by the University of Ghent. I am honored to stand in a long line of Francqui medal recipients, starting with George Sarton, the founder of the academic discipline of History of Science.

18 June 2020: Towards Activist Humanities

On 18 June, at 5 pm, I will speak about Humanistic Activism at an online seminar (in Dutch). "The greatest societal transformations of the past are the result of humanistic insights. This is virtually unknown to the public. I will argue that an activist attitude that propagates the major humanities insights of past and present is more necessary than ever."

Is the DH-paradigm of pattern-searching new or did it already exist before in the humanities? 25 September 2015: Is there Progress in the Humanities?

On 25 September I will give a lecture at Roskilde University entitled "Is there Progress in the Humanities?". Taking Kuhn's notion of problem-solving capacity as a measure of progress I will critically discuss whether there has been an increase in problem-solving capacity in linguistics, historiography, art history, philology, musicology, literary studies and archeology during the last few centuries.

On 1 October I will talk on the problem of pattern searching in the humanities with digital tools. I will argue that though digital tools are exceedingly useful in the humanities, scholars should well understand the workings and limitations of these tools. Op 14 november organiseer ik samen met Anja Volk (U. Utrecht) een debat over patronen in de "humanities 3.0". Dit debat maakt deel uit van een workshop over digital humanities en zal plaatsvinden in de Openbaren Bibliotheek van Amsterdam (OBA). Klik hier voor meer informatie.

9-13 September 2013: modelleren van taalverwerving

In de week van 9-13 september organiseer ik (mede) een workshop over het computationeel modelleren van kindertaalverwerving. Pikant historisch detail: mijn computermodellen grijpen terug op de ideeen van de 8e eeuwse Perzisch-Arabische taalkundige Sibawayh die er vanuit gaat dat het leren van taal plaatsvindt aan de hand van voorbeelden in plaats van regels. 27 juli 2013: The Humanities as Knowledge-Making Disciplines

Op 27 juli geef ik een lezing op Int. Conference on History of Science, Technology and Medicine in Manchester. Het is voor het eerst dat daar een sessie over de geschiedenis van de humanities wordt georganiseerd. Klik hier voor meer info.

28 juni 2013: Filosofie en digitale geesteswetenschappen

Op 28 juni geef ik een lezing over het eeuwenoude probleem van "invloed" tussen auteurs (in dit geval filosofen) aan de hand van formele methoden uit de stilistiek. Zie hier het volledige programma van de workshop Digital Humanities and Philosophy.

14 juni 2013: Decontextualizing Knowledge

Op 14 juni geef ik een lezing over het decontextualiseren van kennis in de geschiedenis van de wetenschap. Onder historici is decontextualiseren zeer controversieel, terwijl dit proces overal in de wetenschap wordt aangetroffen: methoden en oplossingen voor een bepaald probleem worden gedecontextualiseerd en toegepast op een heel ander probleem in een andere context. Op 10 juni geef ik een lezing over de relatie tussen geesteswetenschap en cognitiewetenschap; in het bijzonder ga ik in op de vraag in hoeverre hierarchische structuur in de taal- en muziekwetenschap cognitief realistisch is. Klik hier voor meer info .

1 juni 2013: debat over Digital Humanities: The Next Big Thing?

De digital humanities worden vaak "the next big thing" genoemd, maar een debat hierover met zowel voor- als tegenstanders wordt node gemist. Op de universiteitsdag van 1 juni zullen de vonken er vanaf vliegen. Onder leiding van Ewoud Sanders ga ik in debat met Thomas Vaessens, Irene Zwiep en Julia Noordegraaf. Lees hier verder.

15 mei 2013: Lezing over de Vergeten Wetenschappen in St Petersburg

Op 15 mei geef ik een lezing aan het Nederlands Instituut in Sint Petersburg over "Onverwachte Toepassingen van de Geesteswetenschappen" waarbij ik tevens in zal gaan op Russische geesteswetenschappers (van Lomonosov tot Propp en van Markov tot Jakobson). Zie hier voor meer informatie.

19 februari 2013: How Hierarchical is Language?

Op 19 februari om 15.45 uur geef ik een lezing op het Max Planck Instituut in Nijmegen, waarbij ik inga op empirisch bewijs voor dan wel tegen hierarchische structuur in taal. Ik ga tevens in op de geschiedenis van hierarchische vs sequentiele structuur - van Aristoteles, de Modisten en Chomsky tot heden. Klik hier voor meer info.

14 december 2012: Het Einde van de Geesteswetenschappen 1.0

Op 14 december om 16 uur geef ik in de Aula van de UvA (Singel 411) een openbare rede over "Het Einde van de Geesteswetenschappen 1.0". Met deze rede aanvaard ik openlijk mijn dubbelbenoeming bij de Faculteit Geesteswetenschappen en de Faculteit Natuurwetenschappen, Wiskunde en Informatica.

4 december 2012: Geschiedenis van de Digital Humanities

Op de Digitaal Erfgoedconferentie 2012 geef ik op 4 december een lezing over de geschiedenis van de 'digital humanities' in Nederland.
