The newspaper NRC-Next (June 18) posted my reply to Rosanne Hertzberger who suggested in her column that the humanities is just about reading novels and knowing historical facts. In my (short) reply I highlight full-fledged humanistic methods such as stemmatic philology and historical source criticism. I argue that reducing the humanities to reading novels and knowing historical facts is like reducing science to listening to birds and recognizing constellations.
